It is used to manufacture ceramics, enamel, refractory crucible and refractory brick. It can be used as polishing agent, binder, filler of paint and paper, accelerant and activator of chloroprene rubber, mixed with magnesium chloride solution, to produce magnesium oxide cement. It is used in medicine as antacid and laxative, for gastric acidosis, gastric and duodenal ulcer. Also used in glass, dyes, phenolic plastics and so on. Food grade is used as decolorizing agent for sand refining and pH adjustment of ice cream powder.
