Is magnesium hydroxide a strong alkali

发表时间:2023-01-04

Magnesium hydroxide is a medium strong base. Generally, the hydroxide dissolved in water ionized into metal cations and hydroxyl complexes and a part of hydroxide is called a medium strong base.
The so-called strong base and weak base are relatively strong bases, which can be completely ionized when they are dissolved in water. The alkali corresponding to active metals is generally strong.
Magnesium hydroxide is a medium strong alkali, and the part dissolved in water is completely ionized to produce Mg2+(50%), OH - (8%) (and [MgO2] 2 - (or [Mg (OH) 4] 2 -) and [MgO3] 4 - (or [Mg (OH) 6] 4 -) (42%).
The solubility of magnesium hydroxide is very small, and the solution is very weak in alkalinity. Sometimes it is treated as a weak base and heated to 623K (350 ℃), which means dehydration and decomposition: Mg (OH) 2 → MgO+H2O, which is easily soluble in acid or ammonium salt solutions. Like magnesium oxide, it is easy to absorb carbon dioxide in the air and gradually forms a basic carbonate composed of 5MgO · 4CO2 · xH2O. It is decomposed into magnesium oxide and water when the temperature is higher than 350 ℃, but it can be completely dehydrated only when the temperature is higher than 1800 ℃.
