Magnesium hydroxide is currently recognized as a high-quality flame retardant with triple functions of flame retardancy, smoke suppression and filling in the chemical industry. Its molecular formula is Mg (OH) 2, its molecular weight is 58.32, and it is packed in white powder. It is non-toxic, tasteless, stable, nonvolatile, high decomposition temperature, and does not corrode machinery and equipment. It is the preferred material for halogen-free flame retardancy of organic polymer.
When heated (340-490 ℃), magnesium hydroxide decomposes and absorbs surface heat of combustor to achieve flame retardancy; At the same time, a large amount of water is released to dilute the oxygen on the surface of the fuel, and the active magnesium oxide generated from decomposition is attached to the surface of the fuel, which further prevents the combustion. In the whole flame retardant process, magnesium hydroxide not only does not produce any harmful substances, but also its decomposition products can absorb a large amount of harmful gases and smoke generated by the burning of rubber, plastics and other macromolecules while flame retardant. Active magnesium oxide continuously absorbs the incomplete burning fusion residues, which can eliminate smoke and prevent droplets while stopping combustion quickly. It is a new environment-friendly inorganic flame retardant.
